Our kitchen faucet had been on it’s last legs for some time. It had been going from bad to worse. The time for replacement finally became apparent when one night when, while doing dishes, I only had a very light stream of water flowing out. It was time to say goodbye to our beloved faucet. After my husband installed the new one, I found myself enjoying getting a glass of water or washing off plates every chance I got. My boys soon tired of me saying, “Kids, do you want another glass of water?” I know that sounds absolutely ridiculous, but it was like a new toy. It only took seconds to get a glass of water!
After a few days, I suddenly realized it wasn’t so fascinating to get a glass of water anymore; this actually took me by surprise. What I realized was my new and wonderful kitchen faucet was now just a regular old faucet to get water from, nothing special anymore. I let that exhilarating feeling of how wonderfully my new faucet worked just slip away. We tend to view life like this. We take things for granted or become bored. Our new jobs become drudgery, our homes turn into money pits and our cars are now jalopies. Instead, if we appreciate what we have and are thankful, we are able to keep boredom at bay. That old car, instead of just being an old car, is a car full of memories. That boring job can become more exciting if we look and see how we can approach it from a different perspective. Value what you have. Things may still lose a little of that “new” feeling but they will remain special and special is better than new any day.
